Puerto Montt

Puerto Montt is one of southern Chile's most important cities. It features middle-European architecture, with shingles, high-pitched roofs and ornate balconies. The redwood cathedral (Iglesia de los Jesuitas) on the city's plaza is the city's oldest building. Puerto Montt is the transport hub and access point to the southern Lake District, the island of Chiloe and Chilean Patagonia. The little fishing port of Angelmo located 2 km west of Puerto Montt deserves a visit as well. Great seafood and handicraft shops can be found there.

Puerto Montt is the gateway to Chile´s Lake District, an Apline region noted for its crisp air and breathtaking mountain scenery. Gaze at the pristine beauty of towering Mount Osomo; view the rushing falls and rapids of Petrohue; or enjoy a calm interlude at lake Todos Los Santos.

Shopping

Woolen textiles such as hand-woven ponchos, vicuna rugs and hand-knit sweaters are good buys. A wide range of these items plus handicrafts and souvenirs can be found at the Angelmo market, located about two blocks from the port.

Food

The coastal area is known for its variety of seafood, including large lobsters from Juan Fernandez Island. There is also an abundance of king crabs, abalone, prawns and mussels. Rustic seafood restaurants can be found in the Angelmo fishing port. Empanadas, the delicious meat- or cheese-stuffed turnovers, taste even better when accompanied by Chile's excellent wines or the national drink, pisco sour.
